What Is Typo-Tolerant Search and Why Your Store Needs It
Typo tolerance turns failed searches into sales. Learn how it works and why it's essential for ecommerce.
Your customers can't spell. That's not an insult — it's a fact of how people type. They're on their phones, they're in a hurry, they're autocorrected into nonsense. If your search engine demands exact spelling, a huge portion of searches return zero results.
Zero-result searches are conversion killers.
What Is Typo Tolerance?
Typo tolerance (also called fuzzy matching) is the ability of a search engine to return relevant results even when the query contains spelling mistakes. Instead of requiring an exact character-by-character match, the engine calculates how "close" a query is to known words in the index.
The standard measure is edit distance (also known as Levenshtein distance) — the minimum number of single-character edits (insertions, deletions, or substitutions) needed to transform one word into another.
For example:
| Query | Intended | Edit Distance |
|---|---|---|
| runnng | running | 1 (delete extra 'n') |
| iphoen | iphone | 1 (swap 'e' and 'n') |
| wireles | wireless | 1 (insert 's') |
| headhpones | headphones | 1 (swap 'h' and 'p') |
| sneekrs | sneakers | 2 (e→a, remove r... swap) |
Most typo-tolerant engines allow 1 typo for short words and 2 typos for longer words. This covers the vast majority of real-world spelling mistakes without returning irrelevant results.
Real-World Impact
A study by the Search Engine Journal found that up to 20% of all site searches contain at least one typo. On mobile, this number is even higher due to smaller keyboards and aggressive autocorrect.
If your search has no typo tolerance, those searches all return zero results. And what do users do when they get zero results? They leave.
Here's how this plays out on a typical WooCommerce store:
- 10,000 monthly searches (common for a mid-size store)
- 2,000 contain typos (20%)
- Without typo tolerance: 2,000 zero-result pages → most users bounce
- With typo tolerance: 1,800+ return correct results → users find products and buy
Even a modest 3% conversion rate on those recovered searches means 54 extra sales per month that would have been lost.
How CelerSearch Handles Typos
CelerSearch uses Meilisearch's built-in typo tolerance, which works automatically with no configuration:
Prefix Matching
As users type, CelerSearch matches the partial query against word prefixes. Searching for "head" instantly shows results for "headphones", "headband", "headset". This alone prevents many perceived "typo" situations — users see results before they finish typing.
Edit Distance Calculation
For each word in the query, CelerSearch calculates the edit distance against indexed terms:
- Words 5 characters or fewer: 1 typo allowed
- Words 6 characters or more: 2 typos allowed
This is computed at query time in microseconds, so it adds no perceptible latency.
Ranking Integration
Typo tolerance isn't just about returning results — it's about returning the right results. CelerSearch ranks exact matches above typo-corrected matches, so a search for "iPhone" shows "iPhone" products before "iPhoen" corrections of other terms. The ranking rules are:
- Exact word matches first
- One-typo matches second
- Two-typo matches third
This ensures typo tolerance helps without degrading result quality for users who spell correctly.
Why Default WordPress Search Can't Do This
WordPress search uses SQL LIKE queries: WHERE post_title LIKE '%query%'. There is no concept of edit distance in this approach. The query either matches as a substring or it doesn't. "Headphones" matches %headphones%, but "headhpones" does not.
Some SQL-based solutions attempt fuzzy matching with SOUNDEX or LEVENSHTEIN functions, but these are too slow to run at query time across a full product catalog. They also don't integrate with relevance ranking, so even when they find results, the ordering is meaningless.
