How to Replace Default WordPress Search in Under 5 Minutes

A step-by-step guide to replacing WordPress's built-in search with CelerSearch. No code, no server setup, no hassle.

wordpressguide

Default WordPress search is built on SQL LIKE queries. It's slow, it doesn't handle typos, and it sorts results by date instead of relevance. If you've ever searched your own site and been disappointed by the results, your visitors feel the same way.

The good news: replacing it takes less than 5 minutes.

Before You Start

Here's what default WordPress search looks like in practice:

  • Search for "recpie" (typo) → zero results
  • Search for a product SKU → zero results
  • Search for a phrase in a page body → results sorted by date, not relevance
  • Every search requires a full page reload

After switching to CelerSearch, all of these work correctly. Typos are handled, all content fields are searched, results are ranked by relevance, and users see results as they type.

Step 1: Create a CelerSearch Account

Head to app.celersearch.com and create an account. You can start with the free tier — no credit card required.

Step 2: Create a Search Instance

From the dashboard, click Create Instance. Choose a region close to your visitors and pick a plan that fits your index size. For most WordPress sites, the starter plan is more than enough.

Your instance will be provisioned in about 30 seconds.

Step 3: Install the WordPress Plugin

In your WordPress admin, go to Plugins → Add New and search for "CelerSearch". Install and activate the plugin.

Alternatively, download it from the WordPress plugin directory and upload it manually.

Step 4: Connect Your Instance

In the WordPress admin sidebar, click CelerSearch. You'll see fields for your Instance URL and API Key — both are available in your CelerSearch dashboard. Paste them in and save.

Step 5: Index Your Content

Click the Index Now button. The plugin will sync your content to your CelerSearch instance. Depending on the size of your site, this takes anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes.

What Gets Indexed

By default, the plugin indexes:

  • Posts — title, content, excerpt, categories, tags
  • Pages — title and content
  • WooCommerce Products — title, description, short description, SKU, categories, attributes, price
  • Custom Post Types — configurable in plugin settings

Each document includes metadata like the permalink, featured image URL, and post type, so search results can display rich previews.

That's It

Your site search is now powered by CelerSearch. Visitors see instant results as they type, typos are handled automatically, and results are ranked by relevance.

For Developers

If you need more control, CelerSearch instances expose a standard Meilisearch-compatible API. You can:

  • Build custom search UIs with the Meilisearch JavaScript client
  • Use InstantSearch.js for faceted search interfaces
  • Query the API directly from your theme or plugin code

The WordPress plugin handles indexing and provides a default search UI, but the underlying API is fully accessible for custom implementations.

What If I Need to Go Back?

Deactivating the CelerSearch plugin restores WordPress's default search behavior. Your CelerSearch instance and indexed data remain intact, so you can re-activate at any time without re-indexing.
